Wix vs Squarespace vs Webflow vs WordPress: which should a small business choose?

I build websites on Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and WordPress every month, and the honest answer is that all four can run a great small business website. The right choice depends on who will edit the site, how much design control you want, and whether you need specific features like a store or bookings.

Quick answer

  • Choose Wix if you want the easiest editing, built-in bookings and a fast, affordable build.
  • Choose Squarespace if you want an elegant, all-in-one site for a portfolio, restaurant or creative business.
  • Choose Webflow if design, speed and SEO control matter most and you want a site that grows with you.
  • Choose WordPress if you need a specific plugin, WooCommerce or full control of your hosting.
  • Choose Shopify if selling products online is the main goal.

Ease of editing

Wix and Squarespace are the easiest for non-technical owners. Webflow's Editor is simple once the site is built properly. WordPress varies a lot: with a well-built theme it is easy, with a messy one it can be frustrating.

Design freedom

Webflow gives the most design control without code, followed by Wix Studio. Squarespace is more structured, which keeps things tidy but limits unusual layouts. WordPress can do anything, but custom design usually means more development time.

SEO

All four can rank well. Webflow and WordPress give the most control over technical SEO, schema and redirects. Wix and Squarespace cover the essentials well for local and service businesses. The content and structure of your pages matter far more than the platform logo.

Cost to run

Wix, Squarespace and Webflow charge a monthly or yearly plan that includes hosting and security. WordPress is free software, but you pay for hosting, premium plugins and maintenance. Over a few years the totals are often closer than people expect.

Maintenance

Hosted platforms like Wix, Squarespace and Webflow handle updates and security for you. WordPress needs regular plugin and core updates, backups and security checks. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it should be part of the plan.

My honest recommendation

For most local service businesses, Wix or Squarespace is enough. For brands that care about design and organic growth, Webflow is usually the better long-term choice. For content-heavy sites or specific plugin needs, WordPress still wins. If you are unsure, I recommend a platform on our first call based on your goals, not on what is easiest to sell. Fixed-price packages are available for Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, WordPress and custom code.

Frequently asked questions

Which website builder is best for a small business?

Wix and Squarespace are best for easy editing, Webflow for design and SEO control, WordPress for plugins and flexibility, and Shopify for online stores.

Is Webflow better than WordPress for SEO?

Both can rank very well. Webflow needs fewer plugins and less maintenance, while WordPress offers more SEO plugins and hosting control.

Can I switch platforms later?

Yes. Content can be moved and old URLs redirected so you keep your rankings, although it is easier to choose well at the start.
